Joel Centeio's OTW sequence of the week

Our boy Joel Centeio just nabbed the prestigious sequence of the week on Surfline for an Off the Wall drainer as he describes below...

"It was NW swell mixed with a little NNW so it was focusing at Off-the-Wall bigger than Pipe," Joel Centeio recalls of last week's dream run. "That was one of the better sessions I've ever had out there. I had five or six of my best waves that day. It was consistently good, six- to eight-foot Off-the-Wall with perfect conditions. That was actually my first wave of the session and there were only a few guys out so I paddled straight into the lineup and this wave swung inside. I got a decent little pump at the beginning and from there I had my speed. I was super-deep and saw the doggy door at the end. As I flew out, I threw a little claim because I was psyched on it."

Check the full sequence in animated action here.

It' no easy feat to nab a good wave in Hawaii, especially when you're surfing Pipeline with 100 of your closest friends. However, that didn't seem to hinder our boy Timmy Reyes who managed to sneak a few gems from the pack. Most notably, his Off the Wall Wave at the very end of this video, now that is just ridiculous. Can anybody say barrel of the season? Take a peek for yourself.

Pipeline is no easy wave to tame, especially when it's 6-8 foot, offshore and dredging barrels as it was this past week for the Volcom contest. It truly was a sight to behold, especially when our very own Fred Patacchia was out there scoring high 9's. Fred was having one hell of a run, and during his quarter final heat he pulled in deep behind the peak and got so barreled it was scary. If he wouldn't have made it out then he would've been severly hurt. But, Fred is Fred so he did...and boy did he ever do it in style. In fact, it was probably that heat that did him in. He exerted so much energy that when the semis rolled around he was probably running on fumes, and in all honesty, if the competition was based on one wave then he would have won, easily! But it wasn't, and although John Florence went on to win the comp Freddy sure did put on one hell of a show, and for that, we are thankful. Don't worry though, as you'll be seeing much more of Fred and his winning ways as the WCT kicks off in February.

Everybody knows that Pipeline is the ultimate proving grounds when it comes to the surf world, so, when the ASP rated 5-star Volcom Pipe Pro comes to town surfers are knocking on the door from everywhere to get in on the action. Lucky for us, all of our heavy hitters came to town to battle it out with the best of 'em and have been fairing quite well. Timmy Reyes scored a bomb in his heat, and, well, Freddy P has just pretty much been doing what he has his whole life...dominate the Pipeline left. Meanwhile, young gun Marc Lacomare has channeled his momentum from his recent win at the World Juniors and has been quietly advancing in his own right. Can somebody say darkhorse? Below are a few photos from the Day 2 action, but for a complete wrap up head over to Surfline and check out their stellar reporting.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (November 30, 2010) - With the 40th annual SURFER Poll Awards presented Samsung and Verizon Wireless less than one week away, SURFER Magazine is pleased to announce that Sal Masekela will return to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the event. Charismatic Hawaiian surf star Fred Patacchia Jr. will co-host alongside him. And making their red carpet debut, Mark Healey and SURFER's own Saxon Boucher will team up to cover the pre-show events and grab all of the behind-the-scenes exclusives for the live webcast beginning Monday, December 6 at 7 p.m. HST / 9 p.m. PST on Surferpoll.com

"Surfing's biggest award show in my home town, and I get to co-host it alongside Sal-there's no other way to put it, I'm stoked," says Patacchia.

"It makes so much sense that the industry's most monumental night will finally take place on surfing's biggest stage," added Masekela. "I'm humbled and honored to share the stage with Freddy in presenting what will no doubt be one of the most memorable Surfer Poll Awards in history."

This year's SURFER Poll Awards will be held in honor of recently lost legend, three-time World Champion Andy Irons. While acknowledging all of the surfers lost this year, the event will put a heavy focus on Andy and the legacy he leaves behind in and out of the water. Another focal point of this year's show will be Kelly Slater's 10th world title win. Touted as the world's most dominant athlete, Kelly's accomplishments have catapulted the sport of surfing and garnered the world's attention.

In years past, the SURFER Poll has bestowed top honors to some of the great surfing icons including Phil Edwards, Shaun Tomson, Tom Curren, Andy Irons, Kelly Slater, Lisa Andersen, Layne Beachley, Sofia Mulanovich, and Stephanie Gilmore. With an onslaught of new school talent beginning to make their mark this year, it's uncertain whether the veterans will retain their stronghold on the rankings, or whether we may just see a surprising changing of the guard.

The 40th annual SURFER Poll presented by Samsung and Verizon Wireless will be held on Monday, December 6, 2010, at Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu's North Shore. Attendance is by invitation only, but be sure to catch all of the behind-the-scenes and red carpet exclusives along with the event via the live webcast at Surferpoll.com. The show will be simulated on Oceanic Cable channel 250 (letterboxed) and in high definition on channel 1250 (fullscreen). FUEL TV will also be airing an hour-long show on the Surfer Poll Awards on January 5, 2011, at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Joel Centeio is no stranger to the break at Haleiwa, his lifelong home. So, its safe to say that when the Triple Crown comes to town every year for the opening event here Joel is a heavy favorite. Last year he won, this year he almost won. It was a pretty wave starved final and in the end Joel was barely etched out by fellow name bearing Aussie Joel Parkinson. But hey, second is great as it gives Joel a sweet seed and nice chunk of points heading into event number two of the Triple Crown beginning this week at Sunset Beach. Let's hope he can keep his role alive and achieve every Hawaiian's dream of being crowned Triple Crown champion. Congrats Joel, we're psyched for you buddy!
